Europe's energy future is being built by people you've probably never heard of.
Europe's energy future is being built by people you've probably never heard of.
People with a warm heart for Europe's energy future, who dare to think and act differently, taking the lead in finding inspiring solutions.
Powerhouse Europe goes looking for them. We make documentary films and series about the people, places and ideas reshaping how Europe makes, uses and secures energy.
THE STORY WE'RE TELLING
Something happens when you see it with your own eyes.
You can read about electrification of our economies, AI, solar- wind and batteries powering our future. You can hear about renewable fuels, green hydrogen and green steel. You can look at a map of Europe's offshore wind capacity and see the statistics of the rapid growth of electric vehicles across Europe.
But when you see the innovations and meet the people behind them, the abstractions fall away. You start to understand not just what they're doing but why it matters and what it could mean for how Europe powers itself for the next hundred years.
The challenge is that these stories mostly travel within the industry. Engineers talk to engineers. Investors, policymakers, and the wider public, the people who decide whether these technologies get the space to grow and spread, often haven't heard the story told in a way that reaches them.
That's the gap Powerhouse Europe exists to fill. With craft, context, and real curiosity about the people making it happen.
WHO WE ARE
We started as a road trip. We became something more deliberate.
Powerhouse Europe grew out of Hansa Green Tours, a decade of electric road trips through Northern Europe that Roel Swierenga started in 2010, when most people thought driving an EV to Oslo, Stockholm and Copenhagen was impossible. Architect Hans Erdmann proved otherwise, showing up in his electric Lotus, and the two spent years on the road chasing energy stories across the continent.
When COVID grounded the trips, Roel picked up a camera instead. The work became award-winning documentary film: DECARB (2026), Before the Oil (2024). A festival meeting with Spanish award winning filmmaker Chavi, and later screenwriter Sonja, brought together the team behind this project: different backgrounds, one shared frustration that the best energy stories weren't reaching the people who needed them.
Three formats. One editorial world.
Powerhouse Europe is a new energy storytelling company with a point of view. The same story, told three different ways, because different audiences need to encounter it differently.
Independent documentary films with cinematic craft, real characters and enough depth to make complicated subjects feel human. Made for festivals, cultural institutions and anyone who wants to spend a little longer with a story.
Long-form documentary series combining travel, people, and the energy transition. We go to the places where Europe's future is being built, meet the people behind it, and follow the journey as it unfolds. Things don't always go to plan and that's usually when it gets interesting.
Short-form films, conversations, and moments from the road. Made to travel further than the films themselves and bring new people into the story. Sometimes 60 seconds is enough to make someone stop and think: wait. They're doing what?
Our first expedition: Powerhouse Northern Europe
In early 2027, we get in an electric car in Amsterdam and drive north. Very far north. Eight countries, thousands of kilometers, and the people building Europe's energy future along the way. We'll probably get lost at least once.
PARTNER WITH US
The story needs the right companies in it.
We're looking for partners whose work genuinely belongs in the world we're documenting. Energy companies, technology pioneers, EV and mobility brands, ferry operators, cities, outdoor companies, and organisations building the systems Europe will depend on next. We are looking for extraordinary people that are leading the change and can inspire Europe to find its new energy future.
Our team combines energy and industrial expertise with documentary filmmaking and communications. That means partnering with us goes deeper than placing a logo. We help audiences understand what you're building, how it fits the context and why it’s significant.
We follow the story wherever it leads. That's what makes the partnerships worth having.
Follow the expedition.
We'll share updates along the way, from the first conversations to the moments from the road. Occasional dispatches, when there's something worth sending. The journey starts long before we leave Amsterdam. We're already finding the stories, planning the route, and meeting the people who'll end up on screen.
Follow along and you'll get dispatches from the road, the places, the people and the moments that don't always make the final cut. First look at new films. Updates when something unexpected happens, which it will.
